How to install Eudora-J

If you are connected to the network via TCP/IP (Ethernet, LocalTalk with a gateway to the Internet, PPP/SLIP), read [MacTCP mode installation]. If you are going to use a dial-up (serial) connection, read [Serial mode Installation].

[MacTCP mode installation]

(1) If you don't have a copy of Eudora-J yet, get one at ftp://ftp.taiiku.tsukuba.ac.jp/pub/eudora/Eudora-J1385.sit.hqx. If you are not comfortable with ftp software, use Netscape, connect to http://www.fll.purdue.edu/Eudora-J.html, and follow the instructions there to download it.

(2) Eudora-J1.3.8.5 is the program itself. Place it wherever you like.

(3) Open a folder named "plugin files" and put the following files in the Preferences folder (the name of this folder under KanjiTalk is "Shokisettei" in kanji) which is located in your System folder.

(4) Double-click on Eudora-J to start it. Select "Configuration..." from the Special menu. (Select "Settei henkou" from the "Sousa" menu if you're operating in Japanese.) At least fill in the first 5 items to get started. "Connection method", the third item, must be set to "MacTCP".

[Serial mode Installation]

(1) If you don't have a copy of Eudora-J yet, get one at ftp://ftp.taiiku.tsukuba.ac.jp/pub/eudora/Eudora-J1385.sit.hqx. If you are not comfortable with ftp software, use Netscape, connect to http://www.fll.purdue.edu/Eudora-J.html, and follow the instructions there to download it. You will also need a copy of the Navigation Script Editor (ftp://intersc.tsukuba.ac.jp/pub/EditNavScript/EditNavScript.hqx or from the Eudora-J Web page.) (Note to JTIT-L readers: If you are going to write this script for your students, they don't need a copy of this software.)

(2) Eudora-J1.3.8.5 is the program itself. Place it wherever you like.

(3) You need to teach Eudora-J how to log into your account. You do this by writing what's called a navigation script. Start the Navigation Script Editor, follow its instructions to write your script. (Note to JTIT-L readers: The instructor should probably write one that works ahead of time and provide it to the students.)

(4) Open a folder named "plugin files" and put the following files in the Preferences folder (the name of this folder under KanjiTalk is "Shokisettei") which is located in your System folder.

(5) Put "Apple Modem Tool" in the Extensions folder (the name of this folder under KanjiTalk is "kinoukakuchou" in kanji) which is located in your System folder. If you have a direct serial line of some sort, use "Serial Tool" instead. (If you don't see "Apple Modem Tool" around, check the following ftp sites.)

ftp.iij.ad.jp /pub/mac/umich/system.extensions/commtoolbox/applemodemtool1.11.cpt.hqx

ftp.sunet.se /pub/mac/umich/system.extensions/commtoolbox/applemodemtool1.11.cpt.hqx

nic.switch.ch /mirror/umich-mac/system.extensions/commtoolbox/applemodemtool1.11.cpt.hqx

(5.5) If you are operating under System 6, you need to install "Communications Toolbox". You must use "Network Products Installer" for this.

(6) Double-click on Eudora-J to start it. Select "Configuration..." from the Special menu. (Select "Settei henkou" from the "Sousa" menu if you're operating in Japanese.) At least fill in the first 5 items to get started. "Connection method", the third item, must be set to "Communications Toolbox".

(7) Select "Communications" from the Special menu. (Select "Tsuushin no settei" from the "Sousa" menu if you're operating in Japanese.) This dialog should be self-explanatory. Choose appropriate settings.
