Graduate Programs in Japanese

E-mail Print

Overview

We offer an MA program in Japanese (second language acquisition and pedagogy). Those who have an MA already may seek a Ph.D. concentrating on Japanese. There are two options for this. One is to seek a general degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures, and the other is to seek a degree in Second Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics.

Financial support

Currently, all graduate students in the department majoring in Japanese are supported by departmental assistantships. There are more than ten teaching assistantships available. They include a full tuition remission and a monthly salary of over $1,300. The standard teaching load is 3 courses a year (1 in Fall, 2 in Spring or 2 in Fall, 1 in Spring). All teaching assistants are given a private desk in a shared office space.

Our graduates

All Ph.D. graduates that the Japanese faculty mentored have full-time jobs so far, many of them tenure-track. Naturally, we are very proud of them.
